Team Approach Reduces Bias during Recruitment at NoAb

NoAb BioDiscoveries aims to hire the best people possible and realizes that in order to widen its pool of candidates it must welcome skilled immigrant applicants. To do so effectively, it has created a screening and interview process that ensures all applicants are considered equally.

Prior to application, NoAb requests that all applicants verify their credentials before applying. To aid in this process, it provides a link on its website to World Education Services (WES), a credential assessment service recognized by the Government of Ontario.

Through WES, NoAb has identified a reliable and efficient source for validating international credentials and finding their Canadian equivalencies. This process allows NoAb to broaden and better understand its candidate pool, and enables all candidates to begin the selection process on equal footing.

NoAb then uses teams to screen and interview potential candidates. This helps eliminate unintentional biases that may occur when hiring decisions are made by individual recruiters.

As part of the screening process, the department head and chief scientific officer review all resumés. Their recommended candidates move forward to an interview stage that includes one-on-one interviews with up to four people on the same day. Interviewers come together to share their perspectives on each candidate, which reduces the biases that any individual may have.

If necessary, a final group interview is held with a candidate’s future peers, who provide hiring decision makers with additional feedback.

NoAb’s selection process helps to ensure that individual biases are diminished and all candidates, including skilled immigrants, begin and end the recruitment process on equal ground.
