Challenges can arise during new employee orientation if cultural differences aren’t considered. These challenges are highlighted in the first installment of Integrating Talent, a training video created by TRIEC that follows the fictional experiences of the skilled immigrant Tarek and his employer MetroCan Technologies. (Version français.)
Tarek has accepted MetroCan’s offer of employment for the position of project manager. Given his extensive technical skills and experience, his hiring manager and HR manager are convinced he will hit the ground running. Watch the video to see the typical interactions that occur during a new employee’s first day at work.
Tips for Employers
- During the orientation period and beyond, providing employees with resources to develop understanding of how culture affects the quality of individual and team interactions can contribute to high-functioning, multicultural teams.
- When you grow up in a culture, you take for granted the norms, values and behaviours that typify that culture. When co-workers do not share this basic internal “cultural software,” they need to be aware of these differences and what kinds of adjustments may be needed for the team to function effectively.
