Finding Talent Chapter 12: Colloquialisms and Business Idioms

Since language is based in culture, certain business idioms and jargon may not be obvious to skilled immigrants. (Version français.)

This communication challenge is highlighted in the twelfth instalment of Finding Talent, a training video by TRIEC that follows the fictional experiences of MetroCan Technologies as it considers hiring a skilled immigrant named Tarek.

In this chapter, both Tarek and the hiring manager struggle with the use of unfamiliar terms but get their points across with some help from the HR professional.

Tips for Employers:

  • The use of jargon and slang can include members of some groups and exclude others.
  • Hiring managers need to conduct a clear language audit of their recruitment and selection tools.
  • Hiring managers need to be able to monitor their own speech during interviews and paraphrase as needed.

Watch the video or to use the video for internal training or presentations you can download through the TRIEC Campus. You will have to register (free) and then you can download the video.
