March 14, 2013 – Halifax, NS – Late yesterday, the Greater Halifax Partnership’s Connector Program received an award from the International Qualification Network (IQN) for best initiative in the category of Workplace Integration.
“We’re thrilled that the Connector Program has been recognized by IQN as a best practice for integrating immigrants into the workplace,” said Fred Morley, Executive VP and Chief Economist at the Partnership. “This simple yet effective networking initiative benefits employers, immigrants, our economy and the city by strengthening and diversifying the workforce and our community.”
Created by the Government of Canada’s Foreign Credentials Referral Office, the IQN is committed to helping foreign trained workers succeed in Canada. Their annual award ceremony recognizes the achievements and leadership of organizations in four categories- workplace integration, innovation, engagement and overseas initiatives.
Funded under the Canada-Nova Scotia Labour Market Agreement, the Connector Program is an effective workforce development initiative that helps immigrants, international students and young and emerging talent build a professional network, connect with employment opportunities, and settle successfully in the community.
To date, more than 500 connectors have helped over 428 immigrants and internationals students make connections in the business community. As a result, 177 newcomers have found jobs in Halifax. The Connector Program has also been replicated in 14 communities across Canada.
Fred Morley accepted the award at the IQN ceremony held in Gatineau, Quebec. As the recipient of this award, the Partnership is presenting the Connector Program today at the15th National Metropolis Conference being held in Ottawa.
“This award is a win for our dedicated group of Connectors, ISIS, the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education and all of our partners who make this program possible,” added Morley.
