Creating an employee resource group within your company is a simple and cost-effective way to build the leadership skills of your staff. A good example is MOSAIC, a group for visible minorities and new Canadians at RBC, which builds connections between colleagues and provides personal and professional development opportunities.
Three steps to start your own company’s resource group:
- Find a few employees who are passionate about connecting with and helping other colleagues who are also new Canadians to lead the group and engage others;
- Focus on networking and peer mentoring, both of which can be implemented with little cost and minimal training; and
- Connect to community organizations that can offer cross cultural training and engage your members in volunteer opportunities such as mentoring skilled immigrants.
